Chamber Vacuum Sealers and Mylar Bags

Check exact-model Mylar guidance, film thickness, pouch dimensions, seal settings, and storage limits before buying a machine or bulk bags.

Some chamber vacuum sealers can vacuum and heat-seal suitable Mylar pouches, but compatibility depends on the exact machine and bag. Avid Armor publishes Mylar guidance for the USV20 and USV32, including a thickness condition for other brands. Do not extend that guidance to every chamber sealer or every bag described as Mylar.

Documentation-based guidance, not hands-on testing. Confirm the manual and model revision before use.

Mylar describes a material family, not a complete specification

Food-storage pouches described as Mylar can use layered film constructions. The package's food-contact layer, barrier layers, thickness, and opening design affect its intended use. Utah State Extension describes PET and foil-laminate pouches and notes that Mylar is often used as a generic name. Utah State Extension's packaging overview.

That means two silver pouches with the same advertised dimensions are not automatically interchangeable. Before comparing prices, obtain the bag's actual product specification: dimensions, opening side, thickness convention, intended sealing method, and approved storage conditions. If the seller cannot explain those details, a cheap bulk pack is difficult to evaluate.

The verified USV20 and USV32 guidance is specific

Avid Armor recommends its own Mylar vacuum pouches for both models. For another brand, its support pages specify 7 mil or less and a seal-time setting between 7 and 9. Treat that as guidance for the named machines and a compatible pouch, not as proof that any laminate at that thickness will work. USV20 Mylar support, USV32 Mylar support.

Do not confuse thickness with heat settings

One mil is one-thousandth of an inch; it is not a millimeter. Also ask whether a seller's number describes one wall or combines two walls. A combined-wall advertising number can create an apparent match that is not the manufacturer's intended specification.

Thickness is only one input. A gusset, folded opening, zipper area, or reinforced edge can put a different stack of material over the sealing bar. The safe purchasing question is whether the machine manufacturer supports that specific pouch construction, not whether its timer can be turned high enough.

Do not transfer the USV20 or USV32 setting numbers to another model. A setting that works on one heating assembly is not a material-wide recipe.

Check the opening and the filled pouch

The USV20 lists a maximum pouch of 11 × 10 inches; the USV32 lists 11 × 13. Those pouch envelopes apply to physical size and do not override material requirements. Check where the opening is, then account for the contents and empty sealing area. USV20 specifications, USV32 specifications.

A tall, stiff pouch may be awkward even when its flat dimensions appear suitable. Dry-fit the intended portion without forcing the lid or bending the mouth across the sealing area. If you must reduce the portion size to fit, include the extra pouch use in your cost comparison.

Buy a small trial quantity before a bulk order

Ask the manufacturer or seller a concrete question: can this exact model vacuum and seal this pouch, at this thickness, with this opening width and construction? Keep the response with your pouch record. A generic statement that the bag is heat-sealable does not establish chamber-vacuum compatibility.

Start with the supported setting and inspect the result before committing food or a large bag order. Check that the seal spans the full usable mouth and that the laminate has not burned through, wrinkled, or separated. An opaque pouch may make some checks less obvious than a clear pouch, so use the bag supplier's inspection method.

Record the pouch brand, product identifier, thickness, size, and setting. This makes it possible to distinguish a machine change from a different bag arriving in the next shipment.

Vacuum sealing and oxygen absorbers are separate decisions

A vacuum cycle lowers the amount of air before sealing. An oxygen absorber acts on oxygen remaining in a package; it does not perform the heat seal. Do not assume a tight-looking pouch proves a particular residual-oxygen level or makes every established dry-food storage procedure unnecessary.

Use food-specific, research-based guidance for the item you are storing, including whether an absorber is appropriate. Utah State Extension discusses oxygen absorbers for several dry-food packaging applications. Equipment marketing alone is not a basis for a decades-long shelf-life promise. Utah State Extension's food-by-food packaging guidance.

Check storage suitability separately from sealing success

A good seal does not mean a pouch is rated for refrigeration, freezing, boiling, or sous vide. Avid Armor's Mylar introduction describes its pouches for dry-food storage and advises against fridge or freezer use for that product. Follow the specification for the actual bag you purchase rather than treating all Mylar alike. Avid Armor's Mylar pouch description.

Vacuum packaging does not make moist or perishable food safe on a pantry shelf. If the food requires cold storage, keep that requirement and select suitable packaging for it. Mylar is a packaging choice, not a substitute for a validated preservation process.

When the pouch does not seal reliably

Stop and separate the variables: unsupported material, excessive thickness at the mouth, poor placement, contamination, or a damaged sealing surface. Confirm compatibility before extending heat beyond the model's guidance. Longer heating can damage film rather than improve an unsuitable combination.

If the model's manual gives no Mylar guidance, ask support before buying the machine primarily for this purpose. An explicit unknown is more useful than a claim based on seal-bar length or a seller's broad statement. Choose the machine and pouch as a documented pair.
