First determine where and when vacuum is being lost. A machine that cannot evacuate its chamber needs different checks from a pouch that looks tight at first and loosens later. Record the stage, the package condition and any error before adjusting controls. Keep perishable food cold while investigating; resealing does not correct unsafe storage.

Locate the symptom in the cycle
Watch a normal permitted cycle with the lid closed. Note whether the pump starts, whether the machine advances to sealing and whether the pouch appears tight after the chamber vents. Compare that immediate result with its condition later during appropriate storage.
A chamber sealer normally lets air back into the chamber after sealing so the lid can release. That return to atmospheric pressure is part of the cycle, not evidence that the sealed pouch has failed. The relevant question is whether the package stays closed and retains the intended result afterward.

Check the chamber's sealing boundary
After unplugging the machine and allowing hot parts to cool, examine accessible gasket surfaces for food particles or displacement. Use the manual's approved cleaning method. Check that no pouch edge, utensil or oversized portion is obstructing the lid's normal closure.
For the USV20, Avid Armor identifies a worn, compressed or distorted lid gasket as a reason for replacement. Use the exact part and installation instructions when replacement is warranted. Do not add tape, grease or packing material to force a seal, and do not force a lid closed or open against resistance. Visible lid damage requires manufacturer attention.
Make sure air can leave the pouch
Avid Armor explains that a pinched pouch can inflate and prevent a tight finished vacuum. Some inflation during the chamber cycle is normal, so the sight of a bag puffing briefly is not enough to diagnose a failure. Pay attention to its placement and final condition.
Openings belong in the position shown by the exact machine's instructions. Keep the mouth flat, free of folds and able to release air through the intended path. Anova states that its chamber sealer requires the pouch inside the chamber and does not function as an edge sealer. An external-bag technique demonstrated on another brand should not be assumed compatible.
Keep settings and operating conditions in context
A short vacuum stage can leave more air than intended, but changing time will not repair a leaking gasket or punctured pouch. Return to the manufacturer's recommended starting procedure and change only a permitted setting after the physical checks. Record the previous setting so you can describe the comparison.
The VP230 manual notes that high elevation can affect its gauge indication. Do not use a photograph of another owner's gauge as a universal target. Likewise, different chamber loads and programs make a stopwatch comparison incomplete. If your machine persistently cannot meet its own normal procedure, provide the observations to support instead of running progressively longer cycles.
Inspect a pouch that loosens after sealing
Examine the closure across its full width and look for a crease or food residue that crosses the seal. Then inspect contact points at bones, sharp corners and hard frozen edges. A package can leak through a small puncture while its heat seal looks neat.
Compare failed and successful packages from the same session. A recurring seal defect suggests reviewing loading or the sealing surface; isolated damage around a bone suggests changing pouch protection. These are useful diagnostic inferences, not definitive internal-machine tests. Use a new suitable pouch when the old one is damaged, and only repackage food whose handling remains safe.
Do not diagnose food safety from the amount of air
A swelling or loosening food pouch deserves attention even when no hole is visible. The VP230 manual notes that some produce can release gas. That possibility does not establish that a swollen package is harmless or that more vacuum time will solve it. Follow preparation guidance for the exact food, rather than applying blanching to everything.
Keep the food's history central: what it is, when it was prepared and whether it remained at the required temperature. USDA and extension guidance take priority over a mechanical explanation when safety is uncertain. Do not taste questionable food to investigate it. Discard it when indicated; resealing is not a recovery method for spoilage or unsafe storage.
Check pump care only for the documented pump
If you own an oil-pump model, review the manufacturer's oil setup and care instructions and the record of work actually completed. Send an unclear oil level or condition question to the manufacturer. This guide does not assign a universal oil-change interval or instruct you to open the machine to investigate a suspected pump fault.
A dry-pump model such as the USV20 or USV32 does not need vacuum-pump oil. Adding lubricant is therefore not an appropriate generic response to a weak vacuum. Both pump types still rely on proper pouch placement, an intact chamber boundary and a successful heat seal.
Give support evidence that separates the possibilities
Prepare the exact model and revision, any displayed code, pouch material and size, selected program and settings. Add photographs of the loading position, gasket and failed package, taken with the machine safely stopped. Explain whether the pouch was loose immediately or changed during storage.
If cleaning and correct loading do not restore normal operation, stop the repeated attempts and request the manufacturer's next step. Internal hoses, valves, electrical controls and pump repairs belong with qualified service. A short record of the symptom can reduce guesswork while you keep food in reliable refrigerated or frozen storage.
